What I do:

General proofreading and editorial services (books, articles, etc) for all, and knowledge exchange edits for humanities academics

About me:

Before making the shift to creative writing and writing my debut novel, I worked as an academic in the field of law, gender, sexuality and ethics. To learn about some of the things I’ve written, click here. I have 10 years of experience in academia, a PhD in law, a Masters degree in creative writing, a law degree and I’m a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I was a finalist in the AHRC/BBC New Generation Thinkers awards (2020) which also involved in-depth media training, and I have experience in successful grant writing, speaking and writing outside of academia, and supporting colleagues and students in presenting their work to both academic and general audiences. I can help you if your work relates to any field in the humanities.

How a knowledge exchange edit works:

Want to get more media visibility, public engagement, and impact? Or simply want some editorial advice about what to do with a certain piece of work? Send me your writing (up to 5,000 words, although I’m happy to look at longer pieces - email me to discuss).

I can provide feedback on readability and accessibility, i.e. how to reformulate/develop/rephrase the presentation of your ideas to make them more attractive to editors, and more understandable/engaging to the public. Some things I will help with:

  • Vocabulary - academics often have a problem with hiding their brilliance and impact behind jargon and unclear/inaccessible academic language.

  • Structure - sometimes the best bits and the main idea are hidden in funny places and sometimes you’re just too close to it to see!

  • Where/how to pitch your work - we can talk about ideas of where to send your work and in what form. An opinion piece? A feature? A research-based short article? A book? A grant proposal? Maybe you want to make the cross-over to fiction? I would love to chat with you about how to turn your research into a story!

  • I can also help with presentations/keynotes.
